Raphael, The Council of Gods, 1517-18, Fresco, Villa Farnesina, Rome, Italy.

Gods and goddesses are some of the most important figures in ancient art. Woven through almost every part of life in the Hellenistic world, the images and attributes of each god and goddess would have been commonplace for most people in ancient times.

Our collection of coins shows a wide variety of god/goddess imagery. This section covers a few of the most important figures found on our coins: Athena/Minerva, Zeus/Jupiter and Nike/Victoria to name just a few.

This fresco, painted by Raphael in 1517-18, shows most of the major Hellenistic deities with some of their common attributes. You can see Zeus to the right with an eagle near his legs and Hermes to the left with his staff and winged cap.
