Mainland Greece
These coins, from mainland Greece, are some of the most beautiful and interesting coins in the collection. The ancient world was not divided in the same way the world is today. We have countries and cities within those countries. The ancient world was made up of many city-states: cities that functioned as their own countries.
These coins are from a variety of city-states around Greece, from Athens to Aegina. Alexander the Great and his father, Philip II of Macedon, were some of the first rulers to unite most of the Greek world under one collective kingdom. Many of our coins come from their Macedonian kingdom.
These coins are organized in chronological order. Click on each coin for more information about its history and imagery.
