Description
Magnentius began his career under Constantine the Great as a successful military general. He was very popular among his troops and, in response to the inattentive rule of Constans, was proclaimed emperor in 350 CE. Constantius II did not accept this proclamation and was able to defeat Magnentius at a couple different battles: Mursa and then Aquileia. Three years of gain and loss took their toll on Magnentius and his army, who were miserably defeated by Constantius II in Gaul. Magnentius promptly committed suicide in 353 CE.
