Title

Victorinus, Bronze Antoninianus

Subject

Victorinus, Bronze Antoninianus. Cologne mint, 269-270 CE.
OBVERSE: IMP C VICTORINVS P F AVG (Imperator Consul Victorinus Pius Felix Augustus) radiate, cuirassed bust right.
REVERSE: PIETAS AVG (Augustan Piety), Pietas standing left sacrificing over altar.

Description

Victorinus was consul under Postumus in 267 CE. After the death of Postumus, Victorinus was hailed as emperor by his troops who then moved against a rival, Marius, in 269 CE. Marius was soon defeated; regardless, Victorinus was murdered not long after in 270. Surprisingly, however, not by his Praetorian Praefect, but by a vengeful husband, whose wife Victorinus supposedly seduced.
