Description

Maximian was raised to the status of co-emperor under Diocletian, being the first member of the tetrarchy system of rule started by Diocletian. Maximian ruled over the west while Diocletian remained in control of the eastern Empire. Both Diocletian and Maximian retired in 305 BCE, with Severus and Maximinus Daia elevated to emperor. With the death of a different member of the tetrarchy, Constantius I, Maximian was recalled to the throne by co-caesar. This started a rivalry that was addressed in a conference in 308 CE, attended by the retired Diocletian, whtich resulted in Maximian abdicating his seat again. However, hungry for power, Maximian rebelled. Constantine eventually captured him at Massilia and he was either killed or committed suicide in 310 CE.

This coin is from Alexandria where the main language was Greek; thus, the inscription reflects its place of origin.
