NHTS Borrowers
Who is eligible for a NHTS card?
Currently enrolled students, faculty and staff of the Oregon participating schools are eligible to borrow books and government documents.
How can I borrow books?
Library materials are checked out at the Circulation Desk. You must present a current, validated photo ID from one of the Oregon member schools or proof of registration and a photo ID to obtain a NHTS card.
How long may I keep materials?
In most cases, books and government documents may be borrowed for 30 days. NHTS Borrowers may check out children's literature, videotapes and sound recordings for seven days. Materials which may not be checked out include reference books, journals, audiovisual equipment and materials in special collections.
Are there any limitations?
The needs of Willamette University students and faculty are given first priority. With this in mind, the following restrictions apply to NHTS Borrowers:
- No more than ten items may be borrowed at one time.
- NHTS Borrowers may not hold or recall materials from other borrowers; however, materials loaned to NHTS Borrowers are subject to recall if needed by a member of the Willamette University community.
- Interlibrary loan and Summit automated borrowing are not available.
- Materials that may not be checked out include children's literature books, compact discs, course reserves, video recordings, dvds, sound recordings, reference books, periodicals, audiovisual equipment and materials in special collections.
What is the library's recall policy?
Any item checked out may be recalled 14 days after the original check out date if it is needed by a Willamette University student, faculty, or staff member. A book needed for course reserve is subject to recall 5 days after the original check out date. A book that is recalled may not be renewed.
What are my responsibilities?
Along with the privileges associated with being a NHTS Borrower come the following responsibilities:
- The NHTS Borrower must notify the library immediately of any change of address or telephone number.
- The NHTS Borrower is responsible for all materials checked out to his or her card. All overdue materials must be returned and all fines or replacement charges for lost/stolen materials must be paid before the card can be used again.
- The NHTS Borrower's Card is not transferable. Since the card is in your name, you will be responsible any fines and/or replacement charges for materials borrowed with your library card.
Failure to comply with library policies can result in suspension of borrowing privileges. How do I receive notices via e-mail?
The library, upon request, will issue overdue, recall, and other notices via e-mail, whenever possible.
What if I return an item after the due date?
Failure to return library materials by the due date will result in a fine. Overdue fines are levied in accordance with the following schedule:
- 7-day & 30-day materials:
- $.10 per day overdue/per item
- $5.00 maximum fine per item
- Recalled materials:
- $1.00 the first day, $2.00 the second day, $3.00 the third day, $4.00 the fourth day, $5.00 the fifth day and $5.00 each subsequent day. $25.00 maximum fine per item.
What if I lose materials?
Report all lost materials to the Circulation Services Coordinator immediately. You are responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen items.
Fees for lost books:
- $5.00 refundable item processing fee
- $10.00 non-refundable billing fee
- Cost of the item (according to Books in Print) or an average replacement billing of $60.00, if the item is out of print.
When must I renew my card?
NHTS Borrowers' Cards are valid for one year from the date of issuance. Cards for Academic Listeners, public school teachers associated with Willamette's MAT program; NHTS students, faculty and staff; CPM students and Institute for Continued Learning participants expire at the end of each semester or the end of their program. Cards are renewable if there are no outstanding fines or overdue materials and the NHTS Borrower still meets criteria for checkout privileges.
Help?
The staff at the Circulation Desk or the Reference Desk can answer many questions. For clarification of Circulation policies and for help with billing problems, ask for the Circulation Services Manager, or the Circulation Services Specialist. Librarians are available for questions relating to general library policy, and for general reference assistance.
