Do I need a Community Borrower's card to use the library?
Willamette University welcomes all area residents to use the Mark O. Hatfield Library and the J.W. Long Library at the College of Law. Patrons are invited to search the online catalog and use our books, periodicals and government documents within the libraries. A Community Borrower's card is necessary only to check materials out of the buildings. If you would like to apply for a Community Borrower's Card, please inquire at the Hatfield Library Circulation Desk during normal business hours. The College of Law Library will honor your Community Borrower's Card in accordance with their policies. Contact the J.W. Long Law Library Circulation Desk for more information.
Who is eligible?
Oregon residents 18 years of age or older who have a Salem/Keizer address may apply for a Community Borrower's Card. (Age restriction is waived for Willamette University faculty/staff dependents). A photo ID and proof of residency are required (e.g. an Oregon driver's license).
What is the cost of a card?
There is a $50.00 non-refundable annual fee for non-Willamette University affiliated borrowers. The following are not required to pay a fee:
- Spouses, domestic partners, and dependants of Willamette University faculty/staff; both the faculty/staff member and the person requesting the card must sign the application.
- Willamette University alumni.
- Willamette University Academic Listeners.
- Willamette University Institute for Continued Learning participants.
- Public school teachers associated with Willamette University's MAT program.
- Emeritus faculty.
- NHTS students, faculty and staff.
- CPM students.
How long may I keep materials?
In most cases, books and government documents may be borrowed for 30 days. Community Borrowers may check out children's literature, videotapes and sound recordings for seven days. Materials which may not be checked out include reference books, journals, audiovisual equipment and materials in special collections.
Are there any limitations?
The needs of Willamette University students and faculty are given first priority. With this in mind, the following restrictions apply to Community Borrowers:
- No more than ten items may be borrowed at one time.
- Community Borrowers may not hold or recall materials from other borrowers; however, materials loaned to Community Borrowers are subject to recall if needed by a member of the Willamette University community.
- Interlibrary loan and Summit automated borrowing are not available.
- Usually, course reserve materials may not be checked out, except by Academic Listeners.
What are my responsibilities?
Along with the privileges associated with being a Community Borrower come the following responsibilities:
- The Community Borrower must notify the library immediately of any change of address or telephone number.
- The Community Borrower is responsible for all materials checked out to his or her card. All overdue materials must be returned and all fines or replacement charges for lost/stolen materials must be paid before the card can be used again.
- The Community Borrower's Card is not transferable. Since the card is in your name, you will be responsible any fines and/or replacement charges for materials borrowed with your library card.
Failure to comply with library policies can result in suspension of borrowing privileges. What if I need to keep an item longer?
An item may be renewed if it has not been requested by another patron or if it is not needed for course reserve. If you need an item longer than the given due-date, please bring the material in to be renewed. Materials may not be renewed by telephone.
How do I receive notices via e-mail?
The library, upon request, will issue overdue, recall, and other notices via e-mail, whenever possible.
What if I return an item after the due date?
Failure to return library materials by the due date will result in a fine. Overdue fines are levied in accordance with the following schedule:
- 7-day & 30-day materials:
- $.10 per day overdue/per item
- $5.00 maximum fine per item
- Recalled materials:
- $1.00 the first day, $2.00 the second day, $3.00 the third day, $4.00 the fourth day, $5.00 the fifth day and $5.00 each subsequent day. $25.00 maximum fine per item.
What if I lose materials?
Report all lost materials to the Circulation Services Coordinator immediately. You are responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen items.
Fees for lost books:
- $5.00 refundable item processing fee
- $10.00 non-refundable billing fee
- Cost of the item (according to Books in Print) or an average replacement billing of $60.00, if the item is out of print.
When must I renew my card?
Community Borrowers' Cards are valid for one year from the date of issuance. Cards for Academic Listeners, public school teachers associated with Willamette's MAT program; NHTS students, faculty and staff; CPM students and Institute for Continued Learning participants expire at the end of each semester or the end of their program. Cards are renewable if there are no outstanding fines or overdue materials and the Community Borrower still meets criteria for checkout privileges.
