* (asterisk) matches up to five non-space characters, starting at the specified position in the word. The '*' wildcard may only appear after at least two characters.

inter* finds "internal" and "internet", but not "international

col*r finds both "color" and "colour"

*national does not find anything at all

Use a double asterisk (**) to search for an unlimited number of characters at the end or middle of a word.

inter* finds "internet", "international", or "interpretationsgeschichte", etc.

To look for words as an exact phrase, in the order specified, enclose words in quotes.

"outsider art" will find "Self-taught & outsider art" but not "Andre Derain : an outsider in French art".

Word order does not matter when using "and" or "or". And narrows a search by requiring that both words be found, while or broadens a search by looking for any of the words entered. And not excludes words from search results.

If using both and and or, put each group of related terms on their own line of the form, writing "and" or "or" between each word.

guggenheim and bilbao will find both "Museo Guggenheim Bilbao" and "Guggenheim Museum Bilbao".

zen and (poetry or haiku) will find "Zen mind: the poetry of self-emptying" and "Zen monks and haiku poets", but not "haiku poetry".

Some words allow you to specify how far apart words can occur and the order of the words. Words that determine proximity include after, before, near and within.

After retrieves records where the second word entered must appear after the first word entered.

Before retrieves records where the first word entered must appear before the second word entered.

Near retrieves records that contain the specified words within ten (10) of each other.

Use within # to specifiy the maximum number of words that may appear between the specified words. The value of # has no limit.

To use one of the proximity operators as a search term, enclose it in double quotes; for example, "after" school.

tohoku near mathematics finds records where "tohoku" and "mathematics" ar within 10 words of each other. Word order does not matter.

sexuality within 3 gender finds only records where "sexuality" and "gender" are within three words of each other, although word order does not mater.

oil near "near" east finds "oil in the near east" and "near east oil" (quotes mark an operator as being a normal word in the search).

Using field limits searches for words only in specific parts of the citation. Use the drop down menus or type in the field name or abbreviation, using a ":".

note:spielberg and subject:films finds items with "spielberg" in a note filed and "films" in a subject heading.

You may search a sub-collection (Journals, Audio Recordings, Video, Maps, UO Theses, or the OIMB or Portland Architecture Libraries) or you may limit by language, location, material type or year of publication.

To find all materials that match a limit critieria, use a double asterisk (**) by itself in the first search box, then choose one or more limit options.

jazz, with Material Type set to "Music, record." and "2001" in the Year After field, finds recordings published after 2001 that have the word "jazz" in the record.

** and "Tagalog" in the Language menu finds all Tagalog-language materials

** with "Spanish" in the Language menu and "A-V Media" in the Material Type finds all Spanish-language films and videos
