An online exhibition looking at landscape painting in the Pacific Northwest

The art of the Pacific Northwest has been a diverse yet cohesive movement since the first white settlers came westward searching for lush nature and a site fresh for industrialism’s claiming. This cohesiveness stems from the recurring subject matter of landscape, a tradition well-kept for centuries. Still vastly popular today, the tradition of landscape painting is a respected genre, culminating in collections of the specific category of Pacific Northwest landscape seen in places such as the Hallie Ford Museum of Art's Pacific Northwest Landscape Collection.

Landscape artists in this region portray great diversity in their depictions of the landscape from Realist, Impressionist, Romantic, Luminist, Post-Impressionist, and Abstract Expressionist. And though these depictions of landscape look very different in all their forms, they all portray the same thing in various ways- the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. This exhibit looks at ten different artists and their respective Pacific Northwest landscape paintings to portray the way landscape has been conceived of in this region and look into their different artistic lineages to explain where the inspirations for the paintings come from and the diverse ways these landscapes are intended to affect the audience.

The exhibit starts with a brief overview of Pacific Northwest landscape paintings, followed by the ten different artists with their respective paintings. After this is an image gallery, then  an explanation of the contributions of others to this exhibit, and finally, a bibliography page that cites all of the sources that helped inform this exhibit.
